FRED ON HIS DAWES
Fred gets his bike back!

Fred Weston has found the bike he had stolen from the back of his car recently. The bike was found near Cockington Lane in Paignton, but a bungee cord had been caught in the front wheel, so it's likely that the thief ended up with more than he had bargained for.
After replacing a few spokes the bike and Fred are back in action.

DARTMOOR CLASSIC ON PIXELWORKZ

CTC Display stand at Abbrook.

It was a fine weekend for South Devons DARTMOOR CLASSIC CYCLOSPORTIF # organised by the Mid Devon Cycling Club #.
On Saturday at registration, CTC Devon manned a well stocked stand with displays of local material and banners and flags loaned from the head office.
The club purchased a digital photo-frame to show off pictures of rides and events, and there was a good amount of interest in the CTC rides.

The weather was a complete contrast to 2007. Riders started out on a fine sunny morning with a cool breeze. By the time they had rounded Dartmoor and were returning from Princetown
# it was hot sweaty work into an Easterly headwind.
There were riders and teams from all over the UK, plus a few local CTC riders - many getting a surprise at the severity of some of the climbing, but most enjoying the ride. The event had a good atmosphere and there was plenty of camaraderie between riders.

Dartmoor Classic 2007 - wet...wet...wet

The Dartmoor Classic Cyclosportif is on Sunday 11th May. There is a full field of 1300 riders for the two courses.
Several CTC members will be riding. The weather looks set to be much better than in 2007 ( photo above!)
CTC will also have a new marquee at Abbrook Park, Kingsteignton , with displays and leaflets to give out people at registration.
The promoting club MDCC are still seeking some marshals for Sunday - particularly around Okehampton on the Granite Way, and CTC could also do with some help manning the stand on Saturday. If you can help contact brodie@bikerider.com

SUPPORTS THE DEVON DIRT

Devon Dirt - successful event.

139 riders set out on this years Devon Dirt Bike Ride organised by CTC Devon.
Overnight rain made for some slippery conditions in places, and there were several mechanical breakdowns including a couple of rear mechs. and broken chain and freewheel failure, and a broken rim!

Bigpeaks mechanics were on hand at North Bovey to repair some of the problems, and riders were given a goddie bag from Hot Pursuit at the start.
At the end of the ride riders were well fed with supplies of sandwiches and cakes, and over 40 went on complete the full 70Km ride.
There was a minor pile up in Houndtor Woods which luckily only caused minor injuries.
Particular thanks are due to Derek and Ursula Gibbings, Lisa Pash, Dawn and Anna Presland, and Roy & Barbara Gable, plus BigPeaks, Hot Pursuit and Devon County Council Travelwise for helping and supporting the event.

Devon Dirt - Houndtor Woods
Devon Dirt 2008

Devon Dirt set for record entry.

Over 120 riders have entered this years Devon Dirt which starts at newton Abbot on 20th April.
The route is similar to last year with a few different twists and turns.
In 2007 the course was like a dustbowl, this year looks to be a little soggier although the breezy weather may well dry out large sections.
Highlight is expected to be the ford at North Bovey where BigPeaks will have a stand and a mechanic.
Hot Pursuit are also providing a goodie bag for riders.
Entries on the line are looking highly unlikely given the surge of entries this year.

Newton Abbot & District Community Plan
Newton Abbot now has a Community Plan!

We would like you to join us to celebrate! We invite you to an event to celebrate the launch of our Community Plan.
This will be held at Bearnes Primary School, next to Argos, Newton Abbot on Saturday 5th April 2008 between 2-6pm. The event will be an opportunity to enjoy some our community performers, meet the steering group and debate and discuss the future development of Newton Abbot.
Many people feel very passionate and protective about Newton Abbot and want to maintain its heritage and tradition, but also recognise that it can and must be improved. Not all the changes over the last 20 years have been for the best. Many people feel that the Town needs a new vision of how it should develop over the next 20 years.
The fundamental element to emerge from the consultations is that the people of Newton Abbot need to recover a strong sense of community to help tackle social issues and, very importantly, to work towards making the Town a better place to live and work in. Several of the proposed Projects are intended to strengthen this sense of community.
The Town must be prepared for big changes in the years to come: increased population, climate change, competition from other urban areas etc.

i-Cycles on the move - APRIL 1st

The Hi-Tech i-Cycle

South West firm launches the i-Cycle

A Devon based company have today launched a new innovative product - the i-Cycle.
The state of the art machine uses space-age Technology to combine the art of Carbon Fibre construction, with the latest computer gadgetry and solar powered systems.
Most of the outer shell of the i-Cycle is made of of small solar panels which keep the i-Cycle batteries for it's inbuilt GPS and computer systems charged up. There are in fact three on board computers, one monitoring the machines status and optimising the efficiency to maximise the efforts of the rider, - one controls and tracks the progress of the i-Cycle, and the third one controls the four on-board webcams and traffic management systems.
The i-Cycle can also carry two passengers and despite all this the whole machine only weighs 35Kg. Italian designer Rolf Paoli beleives the machine built at the
i-Cycleworks factory in Totnes will be a hit despite it's £3,800 starting price tag.

Cromptons in Spring!

Spring weather for 50 in 4

Fine Day for the 50 miles Tourist trial.

There was a good turnout for the 50 miles in 4 or 5 hours Tourist Trial this morning.
Two routes were available - The Bishop a fairly stiff ride - and the Edward Burne a ride with a few less hills in it!
The wind and rain from Saturday had abated leaving twig strewn, and soaking wet lanes, but things started to dry out very quickly.

Congratulations to all those who made it despite the several punctures encountered along the way.
More pictures and video soon.

Chris Hoy
photo: British Cycling.
Historic day for track cycling.

28th March was a historic day for British Cycling.
Breathtaking performances by the Ladies Cycling team winning in the sprint, Rebecca Romero, Wendy Houvenaghel and Jo Rowsell, with a world record a time of 3mins 22.415secs in the event's debut.
Romero also took a Gold in the Pursuit, and to round the day off nicely Chris Hoy produced a stunning performance when the 32-year-old Scot twice overcame the young Frenchman Kevin Sireau ( a rival who had previously beaten Hoy, more famed as a Kilo rider.)

The British team now have 6 Gold and a Silver medal and are looking unstoppable.
Wendy was based in the SW in Cornwall as a member of the RAF CC and won many SW Time Trials.

MAR 2008 David Cameron caught flouting traffic laws.

Tory leader David cameron was stalked by a Daily Mirror reporter in a car in London, on his way to his workbench. Cameron did a nifty feint up a one way street, shimmied around a bollard, and teetered over a stop line at red.

CTC have robustly defended cameron's actions, pointing out that he did not put anyone at risk, and this episode highlights the need to facilitate cycling / cyclists rather than hinder it.
