AUTUMN/WINTER 2004/5
February |
Twenty Five riders crossed the channel for Torbay's Tour of Brittany weekend 2005 organised by Geoff Sharpe on 25th February. The weather in Northern France had been snow for 48 hours pror to the ride, so after a handful of miles the riders began to experience ice and snow. The sun was out and the scenery idyllic. Only 75 miles was covered because of the tricky road conditions, and there were a couple of spills on the ice, but everyone made it safely back to blightey! |

Torbay CTC is organising a new event and award. The "Fifty Chevrons" award can be gained by riding a set route which 50 of the little black arrows used on the OS Maps for hill gradients. ( 1 in 5 or 20% is 2 arrows, and 1 in 7 or 16% is one arrow.) The time limit for a ride is 12 hours, and a selection of routes is planned. Currently we have the "Haldon Circuit" route. |

Torbays Jon Sharam has left us and moved to EGILSSTAŠIR in Iceland with his partner. ( About 8 hours from Reykjavik). The great news is that not long after arriving there (14th November) the couple had a baby girl called Rebeca Lisbet, and everyone is now doing well. |

Following the death of a 62 year old cyclist at Lee Mill before Christmas, the Police have called for a ban on cycling on the A38. Whilst it's unlikely that this will ever happen, local cycling organisations are keeping an eye on the situation. There have been two fatalities in 2 years along this section, plus many other serious accidents involving cyclists. Devonport MP David Jamieson is supportive of the right for cyclists to use the A38, and points out that the design of the road makes it suitable for cycling, and that motorised vehicles should excercise care towards them. |

Not content with hurtling throughDevon lanes on his tandem, Ted Tomlin from Teignmouth took a trip to the Velodrome at Newport recently. Unfortunately after the best part of a day training on the track where he learnt many of the track skills he was unluckly and was caught in a pile up, which resulted in a broken right arm. He'll be in plaster for a while, - I know many of us in the DA who know and ride with him will wish him a "speedy" recovery. |

151 people set out from Bovey Tracey on Halloween. It was a grey misty start and the sun never really cam out, but the lack of significant wind made for an easy day out and nearly all of the starters completeing the route. The Dartmoor lanes were running like rivers in places, and well lines with slippery wet leaves and twigs, and all along the route people could be spotted repairing the numerous punctures. Cakes made by Devon CTC members and friends were devoured at Drewsteignton and hot soup was provided at the Dart Adventure Park, and a special " bikers" menu was set up at the Foxtor cafe in Princetown. Family run dodges the floods. After almost 24 hours
of non-stop rain on the Saturday, it was to be expected that the lanes
would be a bit soggy. Only the Brodies set off from Newton Abbot at 10am,
but after a few hundred yards along the cycle track, they were confronted
by a heavily swollen river Teign which had covered the track to depth
of probably a few feet. |
