Matthew Yates

Thieves raid locker to steal Matthews new bike.

Young Matthew Yates from Abbotskerswell regularly rides his bike into his school at Newton Abbot. At Christmas he got a new "Specialized" mountain bike, and rode this to school. For extra security he was able to secure a space in the bike lockers at Dyrons sports centre.

Despite this, thieves broke in to the locker, and stole his bike. Matt. is now awaiting a new bike via his insurance, but remaines undeterred in cycling to school.

Devon riders enjoy the Cotswold Corker.

Members of the Devon DA enjoyed fine weather and scenery in an early season Audax - the "Cotswold Corker". The 100Km grimpeur event started from Bishops Cleeve near Cheltenham and took the riders over the Cotswold Hills through Guiting Power, Turkdean, Daglingworth, to Bisley for a luchtime control where copious quantities of hot food were available.
From there it was a home run through Caudle Green and Andoversford and Winchcombe, to the finish at the Woodmancote village hall.

Gordon Thorp has suffered another stroke.

Our DA President Gordon Thorp has suffered another stroke whilst in the Whipton hospital.
There is no current news or indication of how well he is recovering.

Geoff Sharpe
Geoff Sharpe.

Geoff Sharp knocked down in hit and run.

Torbays Geoff Sharpe has been knocked off his bike near Chudleigh. Luckily his injuries weren't major, but included a head injury, cuts and bruises and torn ligaments in one arm.


He is expected to be off the bike for a few weeks, but should make a full recovery.

John Geraghty
John Geraghty

John Geraghty has died - aged 68.

After a short illness in the Exeter Hospice, John Geraghty died peacfully on December 27th 2002.
John was heavily involved as a cycle campainger locally, and was on the Devon Forum for cycling.
He was a founder member of the Exeter Cycle Users Group, and as a keen regular rider
was always
willing to help out at local CTC events.

Iris Strong - 50 years with Devon CTC.

Iris Strong clebrates 50 years with Devon CTC at the club dinner.

79 attended the DA Dinner and Celdih at the Lavender House, Ashburton on 30th November. Arthur Benbow described his 366 day excursion - Odyssey 2000 - around the globe.
Before the dancing commenced pthe prizegiving included the awards to the winning DATC team, and first lady.
Harold Wilson gave a special presentation for Iris Strong from the Exeter "A" section who has been in the Devon CTC for 50 years.

Teign Estuary.

Teign Estuary cycle route exhibition - last date extended.

The last day of a public exhibition on proposals for a new cycle route in the Teign estuary area is set to run again on Friday 29 November in the Owners and Trainers Suite at Newton Abbot Racecourse between 11.00am and 9.00pm

The exhibition is a final opportunity for everyone, particularly those in the Kingsteignton and Newton Abbot areas, to comment and is one of a series already held. However, the last day on the 16th November, at Forde House, Newton Abbot, had to be cancelled due to the firemen's action.

The proposed section of National Cycle Route 2 would run broadly along the north side of the Estuary between Teignmouth and Newton Abbot and include connections to Bishopsteignton and Kingsteignton.

Torbay hold the last family ride for 2002

Torbay section held a family ride starting from Coypool in Plymouth on 17th November.
Two families took part, and Roger and Doreen Turner from St.Budeaux CC and Plymouth CTC joined the ride up the Plym Valley Cycleway to Clearbrook.

After a stop at the pub the riders enjoyed a sunny downhill ride back to Saltram house for afternoon tea.
Next family ride will be in March 2002, but watch these spaces for news of a winter social.

Devon riders in France this year at the Semaine Federale
Out in front - First DATC Lady and overall winner Linda Johnston.
Devon in DATC hat trick - 3 wins in 3 years.

Devon DA have triumphed again in the District Association Tourist Competition.
Linda Johnston is first overall, and first lady, MikeHunting is runner up, Ian Weatherill is first Veteran, and Devon have the team award: Linda Johnston, Mike Hunting, David Johnston, Ian Weatherill, Geoff Sharpe and Alexandra Webber. The top placings are all extremely close, with all on 109 points and tie breakers in use to finalise positions. For a full listing visit the DATC website.

Devil gifDartmoor Devil "10" - Riders brave the storm.

This years Dartmoor Devil saw a recorde entry with late entries having to be returned.
However the weather overnight on Saturday looked as if it would ruin the event.
In the end Sunday morning dawned bright and showery, and 97 riders set of through blustery lanes.
The forecast was for storm force winds around lunchtime. When many of the riders climbed onto the moors, the winds had gone around to the North West, making a much easier passage to Princetown, and 77 went on to complete the course.

Roads were blocked by trees, and there were many puntures caused by debris on the roads.

Arthur Benbow - Globetrotter.

Arthur is special guest at the 2002 Annual Dinner & Dance.

Arthur Benbow is an accomplished long distance cycle tourist. He has crossed 45 countries in his 366 day around the world expedition with 200 other cyclists. He is now on the next adventure, 2000 miles around the British coast. Arthur has tales of his many adventures with which to entertain us.

The event is at The Lavender House Hotel, Ashburton on Saturday 30th November, 6.30 for 7.00 until midnight
Entertainment will be via Hips & Haws a toe tapping Ceilidh band who offer lively and varied music & callers with clarity.

Torbay CTC riders, far from
cheesed off as they tackle the gorge.

Torbay riders complete the "Tasty Cheddar" Audax.

Eight riders from Torbay CTC tarvelled to Bristol on 5th october to ride the 100Km "Tasty Cheddar" Audax.
They enjoyed glorious weather, which accompanied a scenic route, under the Clifton Suspension Bridge via the Avon Cycleway to Portway and Clevedon.
The route continued through Yatton, and up Winscombe Hill, descending to Cheddar for a lunchtime control stop at the cafe.
Then it was time to climb the gorge, and take to some hilly lanes through East Harptree, Hinton Blewitt and Stanton Drew, to finish at the Nova Scotia pub in Bristol.

New cycle track in Exeter
Tranquil riverside route in Exeter.

Exeter "River Valley Park" cycle route completed.

The newly surfaced and widened Exe Cycle Route has now been extended along by the canal through the "River Valley Park"
The path runs parallel to the road to the Double Locks, where there is a good filling station for cyclists.

The bridge at Millers crossing is also nearing completion, with handrails and lighting being installed, the work being finished by the end of October.

Family ride gets up steam.
All aboard! Family run ready to set off for
Lydford from Okehampton Station.

Torbay Sections family ride to Lydford.

Torbay CTC held another successful family ride on 29th September. Nineten turned out to enjoy a 20 mile run along the old railway line from Okehampton to Lydford and back.
The riders picnicked at Lydford Castle, and stopped at the "Meldon Buffet" - and old BR buffet carriage- converted to a cafe on the way back.
