Flying machine spotted in Devon
Is it a bird....is it a plane??.......

Mike Hunting and Linda Johnston have been testing out the Trice X2 recumbent tandem trike in preparation for PBP. The extroardinarily expensive and very long beast features rear suspension and front disc brakes. The first run went well apart from a grounding on the canal bridge on the Exeter cycle track.

Devon contingents qualify for Paris-Brest-Paris.

This year several riders will be taking part in the 15th PBP, the 1200Km randonee across Northern France. Qualifying rides of 200,300,400 & 600Km have been completed, and the riders will set off from paris on 18th August. Good luck to all taking part.

Cyclist dies in End to End tragedy in North Devon.

A 39 year old cyclist has died from his injuries after being thrown from his bike and hitting a rock face, at Taddipport in North Devon. Ian Abberley was riding with a team of cyclists from Middlesbrough when the accident happened. The four have carried on with the ride, which was raising money for a Neo-Natal unit which had cared for Ian's young daugher Phoebe.

New Devon CTC Jersey

New CTC Clothing arrives.

The latest consignment of Devon CTC clothing has arrived at last! the new Jersey's now have the wording "CTC Devon" in bold text. Committee felt that the wording "Devon DA" was not understood by other people, and that the new Jersey would give more identity to Devon CTC riders.
All the Jerseys have been pre-ordered but there is still stock of CTC caps, and also some armwarmers in stock.

Les Prior at Perros Guirec in 2003.

Les Prior seriously injured in accident.

Les Prior of Plymouth was seriously injured when he was knocked down by a car in Plymouth on 15th May.
He suffered a heart attack after surgery, so has been very ill and will not back on the bike for several months.


All the DA friends who know and ride with Les wish him a full recovery.

Another Trophy heads Devons way.



The Arthur Matthews Sheild has been won by Graham Brodie, for the best colour print in the Rough Stuff section of the RSF's Photographic Competition.
The Rough Stuff Fellowship hold the competition annually and the prints are published in the Rough Stuff Journal.
The winning print was taken on the 2002 Dorset Dirt,
50K off-road ride.

Cliff Charlton.

Cliff Charlton has passed away.

Cliff Charlton passed away recently after a short illness. He had long been associated with the DA, attending YH weekends at Maypool and Exeter, and was well known for his excellent slide shows at the Exeter Clubroom.

Our condolences go to his family

Family rides 2003 - at Blackpool School

Family Rides 2003

Torbay section is running family rides again this year. The first ride was on Sunday 23rd march, and met at Blackpool School near Liverton. Nineteen people from 5 families took part in the run, with coffee at the House of Marbles in Bovey Tracey. After being transfixed on the marble runs for some time, the run then went out to the park at Chudleigh Knighton and then returned off-road across Chudleigh Heath back to Bovey Tracey and Blackpool.

Plymouth Cycling Guide.

Plymouth City Council have produced an unpdated cycling map for Plymouth.

This is available from the Civic Centre at Armada Way in Plymouth

I did hope to put links in to Plymouth City's website for cycling related stuff but there isn't really anything there to link to. Bit sad really. GB

Newton Area
Cycling Group.
New Cycle Group is formed.

Newton Abbot has new cycle user group. In 2002 the authorities set up a working cycle group, and produced a questionairre to cyclists asking what they wanted in the area.

On March 4th a public meeting for all cyclists was held, and over 50 attended. A seconf formative meeting was held on March 18th, when the group was named as the Newton Area Cycle Group. It is hoped that group will be able to work as a voice for local cyclists of all persuasions, to help the local authories develop cycle routes and facilities in the area.
