SPRING/SUMMER 2005
AUGUST 2005 |
The weather has not been good for most of this years family rides but on 24th August the sun blazed down arounf Burrator reservoir, and the ridres had a fine ride through the woods around the reservoir and on through Sheepstor to Cadover Bridge where everyone had a picnic lunch and children and some parents paddled and swam in the river. There was even the opportunity for some off road practice in some nearby mineral workings before returning to the reservoir dam for an ice cream. Next family ride is 1st October - Plym Valley Cycleway. |

AUGUST 2005 |
This weekend (27th August) sees the introduction of new Bike-Bus services on Dartmoor, the idea being you can take your bike on the moor and do a ride to pick up the bus at another point without having to ride a circuit, or to ride back from the moor. The Dartmoor Freewheeler and Dartmoor EasiRider services are being piloted by the National Park Authority to make cycling on Dartmoor easier and more fun. Dartmoor Freewheeler is a free Sunday bus service, provided by Dartmoor National Park Authority in partnership with Woods Brothers of Buckfastleigh, operating from 28 August to 13 November 2005. The Freewheeler will serve two routes - East Dartmoor (operating between Ashburton, Bovey Tracey, Moretonhampstead and Mardon Down, near Moretonhampstead) and West Dartmoor (operating between Saltram House, on the edge of Plymouth, Yelverton and Princetown), enabling you to leave your car at home, catch the Freewheeler and cycle back. Local CTC members are now back home after successful End to End rides. Miake and Michele Radant rode to John O'Groats on their tandem., along with Kenny Parker and Nick Mills. They were escorted by a mini bus with the rest of the family on baord! Unfortunately they had a pretty bad time with the weather, but they kept in high spirits for the whole ride. Ben & Graham Brodie rode from Dover to Cape Wrath a week later in much more favourable condtions, although they had a to battle a lot of headwind on the way up to Scotland. www.endtoend.freeuk.com details the rides. |

Over 52 people took part in the Treasure Hunt based at Broadclyst on 17th July. The weather was glorious and the riders enjoyed an amble through 30 miles of quiet sun soaked lanes. Riders from various parts of the country took part. At the Cream Tea finish, a special presentation of the CTC Certificate of Merit was made for Jean Brierly to mark a lifetimes work for the Devon DA, most notably for the production of our magazine - The Highwayman. |

JULY 2005 |
A sizeable contingent of riders will be heading off to Doncaster soon to take part in the 2005 London-Edinburgh-London. For some it will be the first run, and for others a return to four days of fine cycling across the UK. The 116 hour time limit should be generous to give riders some decent rest breaks, but apart from the rest controls and ffod stops the riders have to be self sufficient. Good luck to all those riding - and come back to Devon safely in one piece. You can follow LEL progress at www.audax.uk.net |

JULY 2005 |
Over 100 entries for the two Audax rides on Sunday 3rd July, with almost 90 people on the road. The weather was glorious and both events enjoyed a mixture of sunshine, with some breeze and shade at times. Roads were a bit gravelly after recent storms, and there were a couple of minor spills on the Devon Delight, and one mechanical failure on the Torplex 200Km. Click panels below for pictures |

He's being driven down to Gloucester to complete the end part of the ride, and get to Lands End on Saturday 25th June. - updates and details <HERE> Stephen wants to thank all those who have supported him. |

Beaky
is back! This is now the third year for these attacks, in the same area, with - we presume - the same bird which is displaying the behaviour. Cyclists have tried putting large eyes painted onto hats to discourage it but this has had no effect. With Tavistock Cycling Weekend only days away entrants are advised to be extremely vigilant in the area around Holsworthy and Hatherleigh. <<CLICK HERE>> for more on the buzzard story. |
