Setting out from Burrator on the family ride.

Family riders enjoy the sun at last!

The weather has not been good for most of this years family rides but on 24th August the sun blazed down arounf Burrator reservoir, and the ridres had a fine ride through the woods around the reservoir and on through Sheepstor to Cadover Bridge where everyone had a picnic lunch and children and some parents paddled and swam in the river.
There was even the opportunity for some off road practice in some nearby mineral workings before returning to the reservoir dam for an ice cream.

Dartmoor National Park announce new Bike-Bus service.
This weekend (27th August) sees the introduction of new Bike-Bus services on Dartmoor, the idea being you can take your bike on the moor and do a ride to pick up the bus at another point without having to ride a circuit, or to ride back from the moor.
The Dartmoor Freewheeler and Dartmoor EasiRider services are being piloted by the National Park Authority to make cycling on Dartmoor easier and more fun.
Dartmoor Freewheeler is a free Sunday bus service, provided by Dartmoor National Park Authority in partnership with Woods Brothers of Buckfastleigh, operating from 28 August to 13 November 2005. The Freewheeler will serve two routes - East Dartmoor (operating between Ashburton, Bovey Tracey, Moretonhampstead and Mardon Down, near Moretonhampstead) and West Dartmoor (operating between Saltram House, on the edge of Plymouth, Yelverton and Princetown), enabling you to leave your car at home, catch the Freewheeler and cycle back.

Devon riders prepare for the ultimate 1400Km Audax.

A sizeable contingent of riders will be heading off to Doncaster soon to take part in the 2005 London-Edinburgh-London.
For some it will be the first run, and for others a return to four days of fine cycling across the UK. The 116 hour time limit should be generous to give riders some decent rest breaks, but apart from the rest controls and ffod stops the riders have to be self sufficient.
Good luck to all those riding - and come back to Devon safely in one piece.

He's being driven down to Gloucester to complete the end part of the ride, and get to Lands End on Saturday 25th June. - updates and details <HERE>

The local 600Km was blessed with glorious weather and there are many reports from people who really enjoyed the event. The route was slightly less ardous than last year.
The Mad Buzzard did clip a few riders, and some headgear was stolen but later dumped.
Several can now add their names to the SWAUKS - SR roll of honour.

Congratulations to Rear Gunner ( alias Andy Hamlyn ) who has acheived his first Audax Super Randonneur.
Things weren't as straight forward as they could have been. On the Brevet Cymru 400Km he got knocked off his bike into a hedge near Newquay. The bike was damaged, but repaired well enough to finish on.
On the Bryan Chapman 600Km riders were treated to some summer weather - i.e several hours of heavy rain.

Return of the
flying felon.

Beaky is back!

The buzzard attacks in North Devon again. The first reported strike is from Mick Fairhurst of Gunnislake, who was struck on the back of his helmet, near Halwill Junction on the A3079.

This is now the third year for these attacks, in the same area, with - we presume - the same bird which is displaying the behaviour. Cyclists have tried putting large eyes painted onto hats to discourage it but this has had no effect.

With Tavistock Cycling Weekend only days away entrants are advised to be extremely vigilant in the area around Holsworthy and Hatherleigh.

Soggy Sunday

Soggy riders return on Exeter's
GET ON-GET ACTIVE ride.

Family riders get a soaking.

Bad weather reduced the expected numbers on Exeter's GET ON - GET ACTIVE ride. After waiting to start on a cold windy morning, steady rain began just as the event started.
Despite this they all set off along the river into a very strong headwind, making the going hard. There were a few punctures but eventually all the riders returned to collect their goody bags and certificates.
The planned continuation for Torbays Family ride ended at the Riverside Tea Rooms, while some took advantage of the free bike health check at Saddles & Paddles # who sponsored the event, organised by Exeter City Council #.

The furious Fifty in Four!

This years 50 miles in 4 hours ( and 5 hours) was held over a challenging route devised by Geoff Sharpe, which took riders up to the top of Doccombe via Hennock, and then plummeting down in Moretonhampstead before another climb over the moors past Jays Grave and Houndtor to eventually finish at the Ten Tors Inn, Kinsteignton.
Most riders stayed on course and completed in time, despite strong and cold winds buffeting riders across Dartmoor.

of the Plymouth CTC

We're sad to report that Derek Bryant from Plymouth has lost his fight against cancer, and died on 24th March.
Derek and wife Annerose have been key to the Plymouth Section, and supported DA rides for many years.
The DA extends it's condolences to Annerose and the rest of the family.

There was a large attendance at Dereks funeral in Efford, and afterwards at the Hunting Lodge near Ivybridge.
Donations in Dereks memory should be to St.Lukes Hospice - Plymouth #

Ivy Thorp
1922-2005
IVY THORP HAS DIED:

Many DA members will be very sad to hear of the death of Ivy. As one of Devon DA's longest standing and probably hardest-working stalwarts, Ivy had continued to support the DA in addition to looking after husband Gordon for the last two years after he had suffered a stroke.
Many will also remember Ivy in her days as a very popular and hard working CTC National President.
Ivy was the key to many of the social events in the DA, in particular she was always involved in the Exeter clubroom, and organising the DA slide shows and the annual Carol Service.
Ivy's funeral will be at the Exeter & Devon crematorium on Friday 1st April at 3.45pm. Family flowers only, - donations to the Stroke Association.

TAVISTOCK RIDES ARE POPULAR:

Tavistock was a hub of activity last weekend (20th March) for a whole series of rides which set out from there.
On Saturday the riders on the Highs and Looes 200Km and Kit Hill Bypass 150Km events got singed in the glorious sunshine on Bodmin Moor.
A large group of riders took part in the classic Kit Hill Grimpuer on Sunday, several riders "doing the double".
