Welsh Sportive is sabotaged - 75 riders puncture on drawing pins.

A rider punctured whilst travelling at around 80kph on the Valley Velo Sportive.

Dozens of riders suffered punctures on the descent from the Bwlch into Nant-y-Moel during Sunday’s ride, and Richard Manning, aged 46 and from Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, described how he became aware that something was amiss.
He told BBC News "The placement of these drawing pins on a really fast descent, just before a hairpin bend can only lead to the conclusion that the saboteur was hoping to cause serious injury — or even death"
The perpetrators had even painted the pins black to make them harder to see on the road.
He estimates that he saw around 75 riders affected by punctures coming off the descent,

There is good news for cyclist and pedestrians who travel between Newton Abbot and Bovey Tracey.
For years the two communities have been separated by the A38, with only a very dangerous crossing through a gap in the crash barriers on the dual carriageway.
Now the scheme to build anew bridge over the busy road is to go ahead.

Lethal pothole is too shallow for compensation.

A pothole in Exeter which was not repaired for months and caused severe injuries and major damage to four cyclists, has been deemed not deep enough for the council to liable, and to compensate thos injured.
CTC member John Thacker from Exeter was knocked unconscious and suffered lacerations, and whilst in hospital met a girl who had been brought down by the same hole one hour earlier on 20th August 2013.
Apparently the council can only be held liable if the hole is two inches deep or more, and in this case the hole fails the criteria by 1/8 of an inch!

New Forest - anti cyclist?

Anti-cycling campaigners in the New Forest could remarkably help scrap plans to launch a £2million Government-funded bike hire scheme.
A petition to overrule the impending suspension of the sponsored scheme has already received over 1,000 signatures.
The family-friendly cycle hire, similar to the ‘Boris Bikes’ in London, was set to open in April 2015 after the New Forest National Park Authority (NFNPA) received £2million from the Department for Transport, with a further £1.57million being awarded.
However, despite the 20 electronically-controlled hire stations generating more than 30 new jobs and replacing a predicted 127,000 car journeys each year, locals appear to have halted the go-ahead.

Cycle use falls in UK

Overall, across England, the proportion of people cycling once a month or more has fallen from 15.3% to 14.7% in one year - a reduction in over a third of million people.

Cycle use has fallen in many parts of Britain, with the falls greatest in the south and east of England. CTC believes this change is due mainly to a lack of commitment from both local authorities and national government to cycling. The data, published by the Department for Transport, comes from the Active People Survey, a large survey of people's physical activity habits compiled by Sport England.

Riders on the 2014 Devon Dirt near Sigford.
Devon Dirt success depite vandalsim to signeage.

The 2014 Devon Dirt was a very successful event overall with 402 riders entering the event.
48 hours before the ride, organisers were contacted by the Woodland Trust, who had been contacted by Lustleigh Parish Council.

There were some squally showers and it was a windy day, making it very hard going across the Moors to Grimspound.
There were a few mechanical problems inluding a smashed wheel on Simms Hill and a couple more breakages near Manaton.
CTC helpers were busy dishing out cakes and refreshments at Houndtor, but by Manaton many riders were finding it hard to navigate as many signs had been pulled down, even though a rider was sent ahead to check all the arrows were in place.

Everyone made it safely to the finish to collect their T-shirts and CTC bottles. Reoprt and photos of the event will be on the website www.devondirt.co.uk

Tim and Sharon on their North2North Cycle Tour.
Sharon Bridgman killed during World Cycle Tour.

It is with great shock and sadness that we report the death of 38 year old Sharon Bridgman during an epic world cycle tour.
She was struck by a vehicle in Bolivia on Monday 28th April and died instantly. She was riding with husband Tim and two other riders, and beleived to be at the back of the group.
The couple set off in 2012 on an epic life adventure of a Worl Cycle Tour travelling from Norway, South through Europe and Africa, and had crossed to South America where they were engaged in the next stage of the trip riding north towards Alasaka.
They had met and made many friends along the way, and had encountered a few mishaps including having a bike stolen in Khartoum, and Sharon was knocked off in Africa.

The couple come from Zeal Monachorum, where they held an event before the ride to publicise their trip which was also raising money for the Cornwall based charity Shelterbox.
Sharon regularly rode CTC Devon events, including the Dartmoor Devil which she would do in fancy dress with friends with the Okehampton CC. They were due to come back to the UK for a break this summer.
Thoughts and sympathy go to Tim, their families, and all their cycling friends in the area who will miss her.

Town Quay - scheme improved.
Cycleway improvements at Newton Abbot.

There have been some considerable improvments in the cycleways near Town Quay in Newton Abbot.
Previously several different tracks met at different angles, and there was a rough shortcut through a grassy bank, where cyclists often took the shorter route to avoid a sharp turn.
Now the whole area has been excavated and relaid making a much wider and smoother area for cyclists and pedestrians to enjoy.

New Forest Sportive.

Drawing pins were scattered across the road near Bransgore in the recent Wiggle New Forest Sportive, causing punctures for some 20 or so riders.
The dangerous practice has been wideley condemned and is believed to have been carried by by one or a small number of individuals who object to the presence of the large number of cyclists on the event.

Tensions between cyclists and some local residents are being tackled by 'top level talks' according to New Forest East MP Julian Lewis. He said: “I'm hoping that the cause of the provocation will sooner rather than later be sorted out but taking the law into one's own hands is not the way forward. Doing something illegal and dangerous is never the right thing to do.”

The railway lines at Dawlish which were virtually destroyed by the January and February storms have been repaired and the lines are due to re-open tomorrow (Friday 4th April )

The line is the only rail link between Cornwall and London. Much of the rolling stock was stranded in Exeter, so even services between Newton Abbot and Plymouth anc Cornwall had been severely reduced, and replaced by bus services.
Ideas for alternative or additional rail routes to avoid the vulnerable coast route are being considered.

Two Mile Oak Pub - no beer for cyclists!
50 miles in 4 / 5 hours event 2014.

Another successful tourist trial was organised at the end of March, with 26 riders completeing the course within time limits, and a day which provided the finest weather of the year.

The only dampener on the day was when the Two Mile Oak pub where the event finished refused to serve beer to any of the cyclists, giving the excuse of "Mothers Day" - a great disappointment as some of the riders were regular customers, and the Wednesday Evening run for CTC Torbay visited the pub the previous week.
