When the riders arrived at the halfway point it was somehwat hectic, but everyone just about coped. The Cheddar gand headed off to do another Tea Van stop at Luppit, and in the early hours of Sunday morning, riders arrived down at Exmouth tired and hungry and ready for a big breakfast at the Harbour View Cafe. |

This Saturday sees the unveiling of Exeter's inaugural participation in the World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR). The event itself is fairly self-explanatory from the title and of course involves a bike ride with the participants in various states of undress. This event does have an interesting history with the first naked bike ride taking place in Zaragoza, Spain, in 2001. Two years later a more organised approach was taken to this particular form of protest involving the groups Artists for Peace and Artists Against War. In 2004, the first WNBR event was held as a collaboration between the Spanish group Manifestacion Ciclonudusta riding on June 19 and the now-established WNBR group riding on June 12. From then on the rides have taken place as a solstitial Saturday observance. The original political message behind people wanting to get closer to nature was a protest against global oil dependency and to celebrate the individuality and power of the human body. Since 2006 the focus of the ride is more to do with promoting cycling in general. |

The Norwegian Cyclists' Association and travel planners from Norway will be visiting Devon on Thursday (26 May) to find out more about Devon County Council’s successful cycling and sustainable travel improvements. The group will spend the day exploring Exeter's urban cycle network as well as taking a ride along the Exe Estuary Trail, from Exmouth to Topsham, to see the impact the project has had in linking Exeter to surrounding communities and how it is encouraging recreational and everyday cycling. The visiting engineers, travel planners and project managers will be able to see the engineering improvements around Junction 30 of the M5, including a shared footpath and cycleway linking Clyst St Mary to Sowton Industrial Estate and new cycle and pedestrian crossings which were completed last year. The Norwegian delegates will be aiming to use examples of successful developments and best practice from Devon to feed into their “Cycling Cities” study. |
