Work will soon be underway on the final stretch of the Exe Estuary Trail. The section between Turf Lock and Powderham, which has been designed by Devon County Council, will complete the remaining 1.9km section. The £1.6 million scheme will develop a three-metre wide off-road cycle path whichfollows the existing flood bund adjacent to the estuary, and will feature carefully designed viewing areas which will provide the opportunity for trail users to take in the stunning views of the Exe Estuary. When completed, the trail around the Exe Estuary, which forms part of the National Cycle Network (NCN), will offer walkers and cyclists a predominantly off-road 16 mile route around the estuary between Exmouth and Dawlish Warren via Topsham and Exeter. The work is expected to be completed by late September 2014. |

The AA has launched a driver awareness campaign aimed at creating mutual respect on the roads. The AA is urging drivers to look out for cyclists when manoeuvring 'Think once, think twice, think bikes’: this is what the AA’s new awareness campaign is urging its members to do before they make manoeuvres in their vehicles that could be hazardous to cyclists and motorcyclists. The AA will distribute stickers to its 15 million members for them to attach to their wing mirrors as a reminder to keep an eye out for cyclists and motorcyclists. This is a welcome alternative to the approach used by Transport for London with their ‘cyclists stay back’ stickers on the ends of buses, vans and taxis. |

John Thacker, a well known long-distance cyclist from Exeter, was badly injured when he struck a pothole in Pinhoe road, that sent him flying through the air. He was knocked unconscious after the accident which was witnessed by an off duty police officer. He said: “I smashed myself up to something chronic. I needed stitches around my eye, my shoulder was badly injured, and a chunk was taken out of my hip. I couldn’t even move my arm.” In hospital, Mr Thacker met a young woman who had also injured herself in the same location, just an hour later. He said: “When she told me what had happened, I told her ‘You’re the second one today’.” He now plans to sue the council after over £700 worth of damage was done to the bike in addition to his injuries. spills on slippery roads. Slippery roads continued to cause lots of minor spills in the days leading up to Christmas and the New Year. There are suspicions that some of the salt treatment of certain road surfaces is bring oil and diesel to the surface, and making the roads greasy. Last weekend the roads were icy, five riders came off on the MDCC club ride and three riders came off on the CTC rides on the cycletrack near double-locks. Gill madge and John Beesley came off on their tandem and Gill was knocked out by the fall. Dave Prudden suffred a broken elbow. |

Twelve month sentence for red light cyclist. A
Bournemouth cyclist has been jailed for 12 months following an incident
in which he rode through a red traffic light and collided with a nine-year-old
girl, leaving her with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain.
Philip Benwell, aged 38, had pleaded guilty last month to the charge
of causing grievous bodily harm. Bournemouth Crown Court heard that
Benwell had been cycling "erratically and very fast" on his road bike
as he rode downhill towards a crossing at Branksome Beach on 26 July
this year, reports the Bournemouth Echo. He estimated his speed at 30mph.
Earlier reports suggested that he mounted the pavement, but according
to the newspaper’s latest report, Benwell “veered into the opposite
lane” as he neared the traffic lights, just as nine-year-old Leila Crofts
was crossing with her au pair, named as a Miss Canibano. The pair were
out for a walk with the family’s dog. |

The recent cold spell saw many roads in the area treated with salt, but because there hasn't been much rain, roads have become very greasy particularly in the Torbay / Newton Abbot area, where many road works and housing schemes have left layers of mud on the roads. There have been many accident with cyclist sliding off mainly at roundabouts and junctions. Tom Dunn from Teignmouth sustained a broken wrist, and Ron Keegan , promoter of the Dartmoor Classic, sustained some bad injuries when he came off on Balls Corner Roundabout in Newton Abbot. The salt mixed used to treat the roads is mixed with clay, which can become very shiny when polished by passing vehicles. Cyclists are advised to take great care in the Torbay and Teignbridge areas. |

About 1,000 cyclists have staged a "die-in" protest in south-east London to call for the government to improve road safety in the city. The vigil outside Transport for London's headquarters in Southwark follows the deaths of six cyclists killed in a two-week period. Organisers are calling for 10% of each London borough's transport budget to be spent on cycling infrastructure. TfL said it was spending £1bn on road improvements. Organiser Donnachadh McCarthy said: "We want a real budget, at the moment we're getting crumbs. "We want an integrated cycling network in London within five years and we want a say at the top table." Valley Road Works 2014. There is some goo news regarding the B3193 TeignValley closure in 2014. DCC Highways have reconsidered the way the reconstruction work in the valley will be undertaken. This means that there will not be a 13 week closure - but a lot of single lane working. See extract from their press release below: "The original plan would have meant a 13 week road closure followed by another 7 weeks of work. However, the revised plan proposes an 8 month programme, a single lane closure only with traffic lights and some short term road closures. Proposals to widen the road at the same time will now not be included in these revised plans. To allow the road to remain open, work will be undertaken from a 180m long scaffold placed on the river bank. Some short term closures will be necessary to allow delivery of materials and re-surfacing. These will be advertised 3 days in advance and be between 9am and 4pm or at night in the summer months. During road closures, the diversion route will be along the A38/B3212 for HGV's and non local traffic, however in icy conditions or snow, the closures will not be implemented. School buses and local transport will not be affected by planned closures and the one way system previously considered will not be used." |

There is much concern by local people about the planned closure of the Teign Valley road for 3 months. The road which serves the villages of Trusham, Ashton, Hennock, Dunsford, Dunchideock, Christow and Doddiscombsleigh is in need of major repairs as the edges are crumbling and falling away into the nearby River Teign. The work will require at easta 13-week closure programme. It's not yet known how this will affect the movement of cyclists, as the Teign valley is used by hundreds of local cyclists as a "Gateway" route to Dartmoor and other parts of Devon, and the alternatve routes are heavily traffickedor extremely hilly. CTC will be asking for mor information about the closures and how cyclists will be affected. |

Feeling is running high amongst local cyclists in the Teignbridge area, after the announcement of further delays in the planned teign Estuary Cycling and walking route plans. On Sunday 10th November a large contingent of cyclists cycled from Teignmouth to ware Farm on the busy A379 to demonstrate how bad it is trying to cycle on the busyroad. There was a considerable tailback caused by the peaceful bike ride. Some motorists were angered by the actions of the riders, but it's generally felt that a point has been well made. The route will cost an estimated £10 - £12 million pounds to complete the section from Newton Abbot to Teignmouth. |

Work on a scheme to create an improved pedestrian and cycle route through Hollicombe Park and Hollicombe Head in Torbay has been completed. The 550-metre route provides a high quality link between Hollicombe Dip and Preston seafront for both pedestrians and cyclists, with the need to use steps having been removed. The route will form part of the National Cycle Network through Torbay and is the first dedicated 'off road' section to be implemented. The route will link between the existing 'on road' route between Paignton and Torquay and proposed routes in the Paignton seafront area. Paul Hawkins, Devon and Torbay Area Manager for Sustrans, the UK's leading sustainable transport charity, said: "It is great to see some key new sections of National Cycle Network now being delivered in Torbay. "The Hollicombe Link is the start of a series of works to develop the National Cycle Network in the area, and Sustrans looks forward to working constructively with Torbay to continue this momentum." |

Cycle use and the distance travelled by bicycle are set to fall from 2015 despite hundreds of millions of pounds of investment and the increasing popularity of cycling in the main cities, according to official forecasts. The predictions are made by the DfT’s National Transport Model, which predicts that the distance travelled by road vehicles will rise by 44 per cent by 2035. Robert Goodwill, the Transport Minister, said in response to a parliamentary question that the department would have spent £277 million directly on cycling in the five years to 2015. It spent £140 million on cycling projects in the five years to 2010. Phil Goodwin, emeritus professor of transport at University College London, questioned whether the Government’s model for future cycle use was fit for purpose. He said: “It is not just that they got the numbers wrong, they got the direction of change wrong, which seems to me to be a much bigger problem. If it says it is going down when it is going up, there is something seriously wrong with the model.” |
