A bus driver who knocked a cyclist off his bike in Bristol using his bus "as a weapon" has been jailed for 17 months. Gavin Hill, 29, from Frome in Somerset, previously pleaded guilty at Bristol Crown Court to dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm. The court was told Hill deliberately knocked Phillip Mead down after the pair had an altercation. Mr Mead suffered a broken leg. Sentencing Hill, Judge Mark Horton said the collision "was not an accident". Gerald Creed, managing director of Bugler Coaches, said Hill had been sacked by the company on the day the incident happened. He added that the firm's sympathies lay with Mr Mead. More from |

Cycling Weekly columnist Keith Bingham has authored a lengthy article slating provision for cycling in Britain over the last 40 years. He related the situation to that in Holland where decaded ago they ripped up the streets and started again. There they spend between £10 and £20 per head on cycling, compared with just £1 per head in England. Christmas Day 2011 saw record simultaneous usage of London’s Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme bikes, according to a data analyst and blogger from University College London (UCL) who has been crunching the numbers on the scheme since it began in July 2010. That’s a sharp contrast to the low usage levels seen 12 months earlier, when cold weather and snow combined to keep all but the most hardy from using the scheme. Plymbridge Woods - cycle hub on hold. The proposed new cycle cafe and hub at Plymbridge Woods is on hold. There was an oversight on the planning application which had not noticed that a restrictive covenant was in place for the land. The planning application has been withdrawn. John Longworth-Krafft, Assistant Director of Operations for the NationalTrust said “ We are very aware that this will be a real disappointment to the many people and organisations that support our plans, and want to stress to these supporters that we are not abandoning this project. We are also fully aware of concerns expressed by various local residents and users of the woods: The withdrawal of the application in order to deal with the restrictive covenant will also enable us to discuss these concerns with everyone and address them where necessary in the revised scheme”. Transport for London (TfL) has awarded Serco, operator of the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme in London, a further £50 million as it prepares to expand the scheme into the east of the capital next year. Additional docking stations will be made available in West London and elsewhere in the area covered by the scheme. Serco will also be installing new docking stages in the area around the Westfield Shopping Centre at Shepherds Bush, an area not currently served by the scheme, and increasing capacity elsewhere in the network. Those measures will add more than 200 docking stations with around 4,500 new docking points, with 2,300 additional bicycles being made available to users of the scheme, which currently has some 400 docking stations and 6,000 ‘Boris bikes.’ More at road.cc # #CTC Devon are not responsible for other external sites that we may link to. |
